Cam thảo dây còn gọi là cườm thảo đỏ, chi chi, cườm cườm, tương tư đằng, tương tư thảo, cảm sảo (tiếng Tày), hương tư tử (香 思 子 -tiếng Trung) với danh pháp khoa học: Abrus precatorius, là một loài dây leo thuộc họ Đậu với các lá hình lông chim dài bao gồm nhiều lá chét mọc so le.

Thành phần hóa học: Trong hạt có protein độc : L(+) abrin, glucozit abralin, hemagglutinin làm vón máu, N-mêtyl tryptophan, men ureasa.

Abrus precatorius, known commonly as Jequirity, Crab’s Eye, Rosary Pea, John Crow Bead, Precatory bean, Indian Licorice, Akar Saga, Giddee Giddee or Jumbie Bead in Trinidad & Tobago,[1] is a slender, perennial climber that twines around trees, shrubs, and hedges. It is a legume with long, pinnate-leafleted leaves. It is also known as Gunja in Sanskrit and some Indian languages and Ratti in Hindi. The plant is best known for its seeds, which are used as beads and in percussion instruments, and which are toxic due to the presence of abrin. The plant is native to Indonesia and grows in tropical and subtropical areas of the world where it has been introduced. It has a tendency to become weedy and invasive where it has been introduced.

Toxin

The toxin abrin is a dimer consisting of two protein subunits, termed A and B. The B chain facilitates abrin’s entry into a cell by bonding to certain transport proteins on cell membranes, which then transport the toxin into the cell. Once inside the cell, the A chain prevents protein synthesis by inactivating the 26S subunit of the ribosome. One molecule of abrin will inactivate up to 1,500 ribosomes per second. Symptoms are identical to those of ricin, except abrin is more toxic by almost two orders of magnitude; the fatal dose of abrin is approximately 75 times smaller than the fatal dose of ricin. Abrin can kill with a circulating amount of less than 3 micrograms.[citation needed]
Abrus precatorius, called kudri mani in Tamil and guru ginja in Telugu, has been used in Siddha medicine for centuries. The Tamil Siddhars knew about the toxic effects in plants and suggested various methods which is called "suththi seythal" or purification. This is done by boiling the seeds in milk and then drying them. The protein is denatured when subjected to high temperatures which removes it toxicity.[citation needed][dubious – discuss]
This plant is also poisonous to horses.

Uses

White variety
The seeds of Abrus precatorius are much valued in native jewelry for their bright coloration. Most beans are black and red, suggesting a ladybug, though other colors are available. Jewelry-making with jequirity seeds is dangerous, and there have been cases of death by a finger-prick while boring the seeds for beadwork. However, it has long been a symbol of love in China, and its name in Chinese is xiang si dou (Chinese: 相思豆), or "mutual love bean". In Trinidad in the West Indies the brightly coloured seeds are strung into bracelets and worn around the wrist or ankle to ward off jumbies or evil spirits and "mal-yeux" – the evil eye. The Tamils use Abrus seeds of different colors. The red variety with black eye is the most common, but there are black, white and green varieties as well.
The seeds of Abrus precatorius are very similar in weight. In Older times Indians used to measure using these seeds and the measure was called as Ratti this was used to generally measure gold and 1 Tola (11.6 Grams) = 12 Masha; 1 Masha = 8 Ratti
A tea is made from the leaves and used to treat fevers, coughs and colds.[2] In Siddha medicine the white variety is used to prepare oil that is used as an aphrodisiac.

Fruits are short, inflated pods, splitting open when mature to reveal the round, hard and shiny seeds which are scarlet but black at the base. The plant is native to the tropics. It grows by the seashore among the undergrowth and in hedges. Seeds when broken or chewed or when the external coat is removed are toxic. The highly attractive seeds are sought after by children for beads. They are sometimes made into necklaces and rosaries. Agness Kalekeni (Malawi)

Anaemia in pregnancy

Image by The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood
My name is Agness Kalekeni. I come from Nkulumimba village, T/A Kayembe in Dowa district. This was my third pregnancy where I experienced some problems. I delivered my first baby normally, but I lost the child. The baby did not last a day before he died. The second one also died a week after birth. I faced many problems during my third pregnancy. I received antenatal care from the Kayembe Health Center and was told that I was carrying twins. During the eighth month of my pregnancy, I lost some weight and was diagnosed with anemia. I also experienced some swelling.

Keeping the above in mind, I went to the Kayembe Health Center when I began labor, only to learn that the nurse had been transferred to Zomba, where her husband was working. My relatives insisted that I be referred to the next health center. I was referred to the Mbingwa Health Center on November 29, 2009. The doctors there referred me to the Madisi Parish Hospital. When I was moved to the maternity ward, I was exhausted and could not even move my body. I was given an Ultrasound scan and told that one of my babies was not well positioned and that I would require surgery. I was sent to the operation theater, where I successfully delivered twins (Lefati and Laineti) by way of Cesarean Section. I am very happy I was saved by this procedure, as I would have otherwise died.

If I were the Queen or a Member of Parliament, I would take the initiative to build a central maternity hospital here in Dowa, where women can receive assistance in all aspects of maternal health. There should be also some nurses to take care of the women, for this is the biggest challenge here. Nurses do come, but they do not stay for long. Additionally, I would take the initiative to ensure that every village had an ambulance bicycle for referral cases. I wish that all women would come to the health center when they are about to deliver, in order to avoid being rushed. As you see, transport is a challenge here.

Cholera Epidemic Doesn’t Stop Illegal Betelnut Sellers

Cholera

www.messersmith.name/wordpress/2009/11/26/cholera-epidemi…
If you don’t live in PNG it’s probably escaped your notice that there’s a cholera epidemic ripping through the population – as if HIV/AIDS was not enough! Anybody with an ounce of brains knows that cholera spreads through, uh, . . . well, there’s no polite way to say it – feces.  Okay, I guess that that’s reasonably polite.

So, the powers that be in Madang, in their infinite wisdom, have promulgated many rules to try to stop the spread. The problem is that nobody is out there checking to see if anybody at all is paying attention. These people certainly are not:

They have set up an illegal betelnut market (called buai  in Pidgin) not fifty metres from our office. They’ve even put up some scruffy barbed wire to mark it off, heaven knows why. They have not been happy at all with my three visits today, camera in hand:

Those faces may look  happy, but let me tell you they are not.  So, what’s so bad about this? Well cholera spreads primarily from poor sanitation. Your best defense from cholera is to stay clean, especially the places that count, drink no water that’s contaminated and do not eat food that might be contaminated. If you fail to follow these rules, you’re very likely to get very sick. The hospital has set up a special ward for cholera patients and it doesn’t look as if it’s going to be big enough.

So what’s this got to do with buai?  Well, think about it. Especially since town water has been only occasionally available for several days, nobody is paying much attention to washing their hands. So, the guy shown above goes to the toilet and, guess what, he doesn’t have any toilet paper and no clean water is in sight. Then he goes back to his little store of death and picks up a buai  nut and hands it to you. You do the usual thing, pop it into your mouth and start to peel back the skin. Hmmmm . . . yummy cholera germs!

So, you’re skeptical, eh? MadDog is off on another of his rants, tasol.  Well, let me show you what I found (by smell) twenty metres from the buai  market. You guessed it – the toilet:

Uh, that brown blob in the lower centre of the image is exactly what it look like. There was plenty more lurking inches back in the foliage. Lots  more.

If you’ve never had the delight of walking (very carefully) around in a tropical area where people are defecating all over the place, believe me, you can forgo the experience with no great loss.

Okay, now I’m mad. Somebody is going to do  something about this or I’m going to sharpen up my pencil and start jabbing it into people’s ears. There are people that I care about who are at risk from this.

The Human Body — Cancer

Cancer

The cells of the body are workshops, a thousand times smaller than the cells of a honeycomb, yet furnished with every modern convenience. Besides, the inhabitants do not mind being shut up in their restricted quarters — everything has been provided to ensure their well-being. And the same laws apply to them all.
Naturally, here as in any community, there are certain individuals who prefer to live in the fringe of society. They are evil doers and they hide, the better to be able to carry out their illegal trade. Their hiding-places are most often cells at the bottom of blind alleys where their sort form unhealthy growths which quickly develop, branch out, and bring trouble to the peaceful city, and often death. These clusters of cells have a frightening Latin name which means crab: Cancer.
